PREPARING YOUR POOCH FOR A HURRICANE

Preparing Your Pooch for a Hurricane: A Down Right Dog Training Guide

When hurricane season approaches, we at Down Right Dog Training know that keeping our furry friends safe is a top priority for all dog owners. As we prepare our homes and families, it's crucial to remember that our pets also need special attention during these turbulent times. Here's how to ensure your four-legged family member is hurricane-ready.

Why Prepare?

Dogs, like humans, can become disoriented, scared, and anxious during severe weather conditions. A well-thought-out plan ensures not just their physical safety but also their emotional well-being.

Hurricane Preparedness Checklist for Dog Owners

  1. Identification: Make sure your dog's tags are up-to-date with your current phone number and address. Consider microchipping if you haven't already, as collars can get lost.

  2. Emergency Kit: Just as you'd have one for your human family members, have one for your dog. This should include:

At least a 3-day supply of food in a waterproof container.

At least 3 days of water specifically for your pet.

    Bowls for food and water.

A first aid kit with pet-specific supplies.

Medications and medical records stored in a waterproof container.

  3. Secure Leashes and Carriers: These are essential for safely transporting your dog and ensuring they can't escape. Carriers should be large enough for your dog to stand, turn, and lie down.

  4. Sanitation: Include pet waste bags, potty pads, and other sanitation supplies to maintain cleanliness.

  5. Comfort Items: Toys, blankets, or any comfort items to reduce stress.

  6. Photos: Have a recent photo of your dog in case you get separated. This can help others identify them.

  7. Shelters: Know in advance which evacuation shelters or hotels are pet-friendly. Not all shelters accept pets, so it's essential to have a list ready.

  8. Stay Informed: Have a battery-powered weather radio to keep track of the hurricane's progress. There are also pet-specific disaster apps available.

  9. Safe Spaces: Create a safe space in your home where your dog can feel secure. This can be a crate or a small room away from windows.

  10. Evacuation Plan: If you must evacuate, NEVER leave your pets behind. Know your evacuation routes and plan for a pet-friendly place to stay.

  11. Calmness is Key: During the storm, your dog will look to you for cues on how to behave. Your calm demeanor can help reduce their anxiety.

After the Hurricane

Once the storm has passed, be cautious about letting your dog out. Familiar scents and landmarks might have changed, and this can be disorienting for them. Look out for debris, downed power lines, or contaminated water.

Remember, preparation is the first line of defense when it comes to hurricane season. And, as always, Down Right Dog Training is here to support you and your furry family member every step of the way. Please let us know if you need any help with your dogs this hurricane season!

Stay safe and give your dog an extra hug from us!
