COOLING OFF YOUR DOG

The Do's and Don'ts After Vigorous Exercise

Exercise is crucial for a dog's physical and mental well-being, but ensuring they cool down properly after exertion is just as important. Here's a guide to help you keep your fur buddy safe and comfortable after those energetic play sessions.

Do's

Water on Their Belly and Paws:

Why? These areas are prime heat dissipation zones for dogs. By cooling these regions, you help lower their overall body temperature effectively.

Wait 15 Minutes Before Offering Room Temperature Water:

Why? Immediately drinking large amounts of water can cause stomach upset. Giving them room temperature water, after a short pause, ensures they rehydrate without shocking their system.

Take Your Dog for a Cool Down Walk:

Why? Just as humans need to cool down after exercise, dogs benefit from a gentle walk to bring their heart rate back to normal gradually.

Encourage Your Dog to Use the Restroom/Urinate:

Why? Exercising can stimulate the need to go. Moreover, urination can help expel any potential toxins or by-products from exertion.

Offer a Shady Area to Rest:

Why? Resting in the shade ensures they're not exposed to additional heat from the sun, allowing their body to cool naturally.

Don'ts

Never Pour Water on the Dog's Back:

Why? Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat through their skin. Pouring water on their back can trap heat instead of dissipating it.

Avoid Offering Ice Water:

Why? Very cold water can shock the system and even lead to a condition called bloat, especially if they drink too quickly.

Refrain from Offering Food or Treats:

Why? Their body needs to focus on cooling down. Introducing food can divert essential resources to digestion, which might be taxing immediately after vigorous exercise.

Never Put Your Dog Away in a Kennel Without Supervision:

Why? If your dog is overheated, they could face complications, and it's essential to keep an eye on them. In an enclosed kennel, there might not be adequate airflow, prolonging the cooling process.

While it's a joy watching our dogs play and exercise, their safety should always be a priority. By following these guidelines, you'll ensure that your pet cools down safely and is ready for the next play session in no time!
