SO, YOU WANT A PROTECTION DOG?

Since my husband, Yvan, and I started our small dog training business, we get so many people that want to train their dog for “protection”.

Some reasons include:

1. It is a malinois or GSD.

2. I don’t have time for sport.

Reality:

1. Not all malinois or GSD [insert whatever other biting breed you can think of] are suitable for protection work.

2. Protection does not take less energy, time, or money in comparison to sport dogs.

Their jaws drop at the plans we lay out for them. Yes, it’s a plan… and yes, it’s an enormous amount of work… JUST LIKE A SPORT!

The beginning isn’t fun protection scenarios like the police do. It is handler and dog relationship building.

It’s not the videos of their dog clearly uncomfortable on an aggression table. It’s working at the dog’s pace with the correct equipment!

It isn’t bite after bite after bite. It is precision and control through advanced obedience.

I guess some people just want cool videos for Instagram.
